After coming home from an all-day cycle ride – where I’d had a very disappointing chocolate brownie at one of my favourite tearooms – imagine my delight to find a parcel containing ‘Baked & Boxed’ brownies had been delivered whilst I was out. Annie, the founder of Baked & Boxed had very kindly sent me some brownies to taste and review.
The brownies come in a very smart looking slate black box with ‘Baked & Boxed’ imprinted on it. On opening the box they are beautifully presented, the brownies are wrapped in greaseproof paper, then wrapped in purple tissue paper and tied in a bow with ribbon with the brand name running along it. On the back of the box the ‘best before date’ is shown, normally around six days. I’ve just had a bite from one which is 8 days old and it’s still just as great.
There are four flavours, classic chocolate, salted caramel, the ultimate brownies with soured cherries and walnut chocolate. I was lucky to try three flavours.
The smell of all the flavours I tried is unmistakably that of a brownie! A very rich, chocolate smell. They are quite ‘squidgy’ and soft, but not in a messy way. On biting into the brownie there is a very thin layer of ‘crispness’ to the top of it so as you eat it you can feel and hear the crispness, but it is very subtle and very nice. They were incredibly fresh. I didn’t eat the whole box myself – although it wouldn’t have been too difficult as they were extremely moreish and so, so yummy – my family had some and a friend. We all agreed that they were the best we’d ever had.
I tried the salted caramel flavour and it had the same ‘crispness’ to the top and smell as that of the classic chocolate. They weren’t too salty, the flavours were very subtle. My favourite flavour was the ultimate chocolate brownies with soured cherries. I’d not come across soured cherries before – I have now seen them in supermarkets – and they made a wonderful match with the sweetness of the chocolate. The cherries were very fresh too and quite juicy. There were plenty of cherries in each square too.
What a wonderful present to send somebody instead of the usual flowers or chocolates! And beautifully gift-boxed too. The brownies come in boxes of 10 for £18.95. Also available is a tower of 3 boxes of brownies, which you can mix and match flavours, this is priced at £45. The boxes are delivered via private courier on the day of your choice, weekday delivery is free of charge, but there is a charge for Saturday delivery.
There’s nothing not to like about these brownies, the presentation and the taste are excellent.
I’ve just arrived home from another long and hilly cycle ride so I’m ready for a nice hot bath, a cuppa and the rest of that 8 day old brownie…sigh…heaven!
Living life, loving cake,
A x
