Hunter Gatherer Coffee, Southsea

Hunter Gatherer Coffee, bright yellow, can’t miss it/items for sale/lovely coffee machine transfer with the owners in the picture/love this card/flat white

Hunter Gatherer Coffee in Albert Road, Southsea is in their fourth week of opening and I’d only found out about them quite by chance last week somewhere on social media. As I was meeting a friend for lunch the very next day I quickly contacted her to change the venue so I could try it out.

Menu

They have a nice simple menu with all things that I love. Smashed avocado’s on toast with halloumi being one of my very favourites. They had a few specials written on the blackboard, soup/quiche/sandwich of the day – see the photo below…

No seats were available in the sunny front part of the cafe which was a shame but I asked if they would give me a shout when one was free. I sat downstairs in an area with long red rustic looking wooden benches with a banquette made from chipboard, which I wasn’t too keen on I must admit (I’m getting old 😉 ), they also have have a chipboard banquette in the main part too which we swapped to once a table became free, it wasn’t too uncomfortable. Downstairs there’s also a large blackboard on one wall for kiddies – or big kids – to chalk on.

Smashed avocado with halloumi as ‘extra’

There was plenty of avocado piled on top of the toast and two nice thick pieces of halloumi with sea salt and chilli pepper flakes on the side.

Counter

At the counter were several cakes, some vegetarian/vegan ones from a local cake maker, bread and pastries from Bread Addiction and the ‘sandwich of the day’ which looked really nice. In the corner were a few items for sale such as some nice bright bags, greeting cards, air plants and knick-knack/gifts.

I liked the sides of the coffee machine, it had a colourful transfer of the owners and their baby – who I believe is called Hunter – in the scene. Nice touch.

Cake boxed and ready to take away

I was rather full after two lovely flat white coffees and the smashed avo’ dish but I can’t review a place without sampling their cakes now can I? I chose banana cake and a chocolate cake. These were nicely boxed up for me to take home.

Both cakes were tasty, fresh and moist.

Hunter Gatherer Coffee have free wifi which is handy, I always love to take photo’s of what I’m eating and post them onto Instagram. The name Hunter Gatherer made me think of Helen straight away who’s currently on a dairy farm on the south island of NZ and only recently went to a hunter gatherers meet up.

I’d definitely go again, it’s a nice friendly little independent coffee shop and I may even take Geoff there one day. If you like places like Home Coffee (which is at the other end of Albert Road, and in Cosham now too) and Southsea Coffee Co., then you’ll like this too.
