Helen’s Surprise Rolls Recipe

Helen’s Suprise Rolls

I find it difficult to come up with different ideas for savoury smoko. Originating in the British Merchant Navy, Smoko is a short morning break taken by workers in Australia and New Zealand. Many find it hard eat when they get up at 4:30am so the light meal served at smoko needs to be substantial enough to keep us going until lunch. Usually consisting of a sweet and savoury dish, it also needs to be easy to eat with your hands and quick to make as it often needs to be ready for our 5am start. My suprise rolls are perfect for smoko and I enjoy creating different fillings every time.

Ingredients:

Sheets of ready rolled puff pastry* – no time to make my own!

1 beaten egg

Filling of any kind. I’ve used left over chilli con carne, bolognese, beef curry, Moroccan spiced mince and made my own Cornish pasty mince, corn relish mince and BBQ cheese mince. I’ve even tried peanut butter and jam!

Method:

1. Cut pastry into four squares

2. Place a tablespoon of filling in the middle

3. Roll and press down at each end

4. Brush with beaten egg

5. Bake in oven at approximately 190-220c degrees until golden

*if you run out of puff pastry, shortcrust pastry works just as well although it’s best to fold these in to parcels as opposed to rolls as the pastry is more crumbly.

I often use a knife to make little patterns on top and sprinkle with cracked pepper or chilli powder for an extra kick.

Any questions, just ask – Enjoy!
