This week’s sweet treats : 31/10/2014

What better way to start your Friday than with our weekly round-up of some of the many sweet treats we’ve eaten this week. Here’s five of our favourites! Clockwise from L-R

1. I found another Portugese tart, they seem to be quite popular now. Also known as Pastéis de Nata, they are made from a filo-type of pastry which is wrapped round and round and filled with a very nice thick sweet custard. This time I found them in Casa de Castro in Albert Road, Southsea which we have yet to review, although I have been there a couple of times in the past. My friend Sarah, whom I was with had a very nice slice of freshly made focaccia. I shall definitely return there very soon.

2. If you ever find yourself in Australia then look out for a fab’ chocolate shop by the name of Max Brenner. Geoff and I visited one branch in Sydney back in 2011 and I always regret not buying myself one of their ‘hug-a-mugs‘ to hold a drink of hot chocolate – I shall most definitely be buying one on my return. If you love chocolate then this is the place for you – drinks, cakes, everything is chocolate, be it white, milk or dark – they need to come over to England.  Helen enjoyed a peanut butter praline. A peanut butter praline. A? How could she stop at buying just one chocolate? Odd.

3. This is just one of the amazing cakes I had whilst on holiday in Combourg, France recently. D & B Saillard patisserie in the centre of the town have all the usual pastries and breads you’d expect to find in a French patisserie but also some very special cakes too. This was a thin layer of sponge all the way around, including the base with raspberries embedded into it and inside a smooth mousse-like centre. Topped with a layer of raspberry jelly and fresh raspberries.

4. A distinctly average salted caramel doughnut and peanut butter tart from Mary Street Bakery on Beaufort Street in Perth, Australia. Still, I suppose you can’t win them all.

5. Okay, technically not really a sweet treat but I’ve not had enough this week to make a full post as I’m trying to be…well…sort of good. So I’ve added a coffee instead because it looks so nice and Helen enjoyed it.
