Lucky’s Wonderland in Kingly Court

Our Wonderland experience
Our Wonderland experience

Having recently reviewed Lucky’s Tiny Pieces of Wonderland, I was pleased to hear that they decided to set up shop in Kingly Court, just off Carnaby Street.  It’s surprisingly quiet location is perfect for a well-deserved break from the hustle and bustle of central London.  Lucky’s “wonderland experience” is within keeping with the brands usual yet quirky nature but with a minimalistic spacious interior decorated with fake grass and fairy lights. The shop-come-café contains a handful of glass tables and clear plastic chairs which in this weather were cold and uncomfortable. The door had broken which meant we had to keep our coats on whilst we sat at our table inside, which we didn’t mind too much as a hot drink soon warmed us up. The menu is small but adequate, offering a range of sweet and savoury treats along with hot and cold drinks.

One of the suggested menu options priced at £5.95, included a cup of tea, a savoury bite and a miniature chocolate cake. I thought this was fairly good value so I chose a savoury ‘little baby pig’, a ‘peanut bunny’ and a mug of classic afternoon tea. The savoury treats displayed in a counter at the front looked like miniature loaves of bread and were available to eat in or take away. Out of the three, I chose ‘little baby pig’ which was flavoured with bacon and cheese. The savoury loaf tasted similar to a scone or muffin but had a more bread-like consistency. It was lovely and fresh, not to mention warm, which was well received on a frosty Monday morning.

My tea was served with a jug of hot milk as requested which was a little too frothy to dissolve in tea, although this was my fault for asking for it this way. Even the tea bag was extraordinary cute as it resembled a small round sack which reminded me of the three little pigs, keeping in line with the fairy tale theme.  I’m not sure what brand the tea was but it was very sweet and flavoursome. I decided to save my sweet ‘peanut bunny’ for later, conscious not to fill up before our afternoon tea booked for later. Peanut bunny is a 60% cocoa dark chocolate filled with crunchy peanut butter and sweet honey cake, which in my eyes is a fantastic combination of flavours.

Mum went for a hot chocolate made with real dark chocolate. It was comforting and large enough for its £4 price tag. Along with the hot chocolate mum enjoyed a ‘lazy rabbit’ which is a 40% milk chocolate containing a bailey’s ganche and sweet honey cake. Find out what we thought of Lucky’s miniature chocolate cakes including Lazy Rabbit in our recent review.  Mum couldn’t resist purchasing a ‘tweedle twin’ to take back with her to the south coast of England. Tweedle twins are gorgeous little jars containing a twin layer of delicious cakes with creamy toppings in indulgent flavours.  The chosen flavour, ‘toffee groove’ consists of  60% cocoa dark chocolate & English toffee cake with a sea salted soft caramel topping. What more could you ask for!

There has been no news to whether Lucky’s Wonderland is here to stay, making it a permanent addition to the London café scene.  Already extended once, there is no promise the lease will remain which is disappointing to hear.  We thoroughly enjoyed our Lucky’s experience; the young lady behind the counter was friendly and helpful and there was a good selection of hot drinks and cake. If Lucky’s are looking for a permanent home, I would hope they consider a cosier atmosphere that includes comfier furniture and warmer air temperature.  With this in mind I see no reason why Lucky’s Wonderland can’t be truly wonderful.  Keep your eyes peeled for updates via their Twitter account @LuckysLondon. If you can’t wait to visit, their products are available to purchase in a number of department stores and through their online shop. Take yourself to wonderland!
