Blendworth Furnishings Café, Horndean

The cafe interior

I’ve visited Blendworth Furnishings Café  & Terrace Garden in Horndean, Hampshire, many times over the last few years, usually by bike, mostly for coffee and cake, but sometimes for a spot of lunch too.

Menu

The staff are nice and friendly and service is very good. On offer are the usual dishes; a breakfast menu, soup of the day, quiche of the day, jacket potatoes, paninis, sandwiches, cream teas and Afternoon Tea to name but a few. And of course, there are plenty of homemade cakes to choose from. Excellent!

Cakes!

My husband Geoff and I each had a cup of tea, two in fact as it came in a large pot to share and we both ordered the soup of the day which was root vegetable. This came served with a brown or white roll and two little packets of butter which were not rock hard! Fantastic! I hate being served un-spreadable butter which you have to try and soften with your hands or hold it against a teapot.

Soup of the day – root vegetable

Our soup was served to us by who we presume was the chef, as he was wearing a pinny and chef-type hat – bit of a give-away. He was friendly too and warned us that the bowls were very hot, but the lid was cool. He was quite right. As we took the lids off, the soup was still bubbling away inside. It was nuclear hot! It took 20 minutes – and I’m not exaggerating here – until I could attempt to eat the soup and even then I had to blow on the spoon before I could put it anywhere near my mouth. Geoff’s always been able to eat/ drink very hot things and can drink tea straight away. But this had even him beat. I must say that we both found that it was rather salty, even after one mouthful we noticed. On saying this, it still was very tasty and we both enjoyed it very much.

Nuclear hot soup!

We are trying to be healthy and cutting out all the naughty stuff after a rather indulgent Christmas, so unfortunately cake was off the menu for us 🙁 But, as I mentioned, I’ve already enjoyed several cakes here before and they have always been very nice and fresh. Here’s a photo of a really nice slice of Bakewell Tart which I enjoyed here not so long ago.

And Lemon drizzle cake…

Blendworth Fabrics (which is what we’ve always called it) is a great shop to visit for… well, not just fabrics. They have wallpaper books and cushions, pictures, ornaments and a few lamps and a little furniture, some very nice stuff in fact. I always like to have a browse around the shop whenever we visit.

If I hadn’t been cutting down I would have had this lovely looking lime cake 🙁

Blendworth Furnishings Café has a nice ambience, with beamed ceilings, nice decor with pictures upon the wall and also a lovely display of fresh flowers (which unfortunately I was unable to get a photo of without disturbing other diners). Soft music played in the background but it seemed to disappear after a while, which was a shame. Outside there is a nice terrace for the summer months with a few tables with umbrellas, over-looking a nice garden. At the front of the shop is a car-park with plenty of parking spaces and to get to the café you have to walk through the shop.

Nice and cosy

We are still laughing a day later at how hot the soup was. Our cars’ electrics is dodgy, showing the temperature outside a lot hotter than it actually is. Today it said 65 degrees and Geoff commented on it, saying it was hotter than the sun and if we were out in it our blood would be simmering (okay, that is slightly incorrect). “A bit like yesterday’s soup then” I replied 😉
